OPEN MAGNETIC RESONANCE (MRI)
THE NEW, OPEN MAGNETIC RESONANCE (MRI) AT THE
In April 2007 we opened a magnetic resonance laboratory featuring the NMR apparatus Airis Mate, an open gantry 0.2T system manufactured by
The advantages of magnetic resonance imaging using
· unobstructed access to the patient, thus a high degree of patient comfort
· perfect for children and patients suffering from claustrophobia
· silent operation; a constant magnetic field
· a wide range of sequences covering a broad spectrum of clinical applications
· the opportunity for post-surgical examination of patients with metal implants
A wide range of examinations:
· the head, pituitary gland and sinuses
· the abdominal and true pelvic cavities
· the cervical / thoracic / lumbosacral spine
· the upper limb joints: the shoulder, elbow and wrist
· the lower limb joints: the hip, knee, ankle and foot
· the breast, with MRI
Breast MR imaging is acknowledged as the best method used in the diagnostics of early mammary gland lesions. Its reduced popularity is due chiefly to economic considerations. Although traditional mammography is much cheaper, MRI mammography is recognised as being more accurate and twice as effective in detecting early lesions in the breast.
Breast MR imaging is recommended particularly for young women of up to 45 years of age:
· with a family history of breast cancer
· possessing mutations of genes BRCA or BRCA2
· having undergone mammary gland surgery (with the presence of scars)
Relative contraindications:
· second or third trimester pregnancy
· the presence of metal clips in the brain
· the presence of endoprostheses or other metal implants (it is necessary to enquire at your healthcare centre as to the type of metal implanted or used during treatment)
Absolute contraindications:
· the presence of a cardiac pacemaker
· the presence of ferromagnetic heart valves
· the presence of neurostimulators
· first trimester pregnancy
· obesity with an abdominal circumference above 130cm
